Terminology work

The following term-analysis documents were produced as part of the Standardization Committee’s project to standardize French common law vocabulary in the field of the law of trusts. This project led to the publication of the Law of Trusts Glossary (Common Law), published as Terminology Bulletin 259 (English-French) and Bulletin de terminologie 259 (français-anglais), by the Translation Bureau of Canada.

The term-analysis documents were produced by the Centre for Legal Translation and Documentation of Ottawa (CTDJ), the Centre de traduction et de terminologie juridiques de Moncton (CTTJ) and l’Institut Joseph-Dubuc (now the Centre de ressources en français juridique) of Winnipeg.

The following term-analysis documents were produced as part of the Standardization Committee’s project to standardize French common law vocabulary in the fields of contract law and tort law. This project led to the publication, in 2008, of the Law of Contracts and Law of Torts Glossary (Common law), published as Terminology Bulletin 266 (English-French) and Bulletin terminologique 266 (français-anglais), by the Terminology Standardization Directorate of the Translation Bureau of Canada in collaboration with Promoting Access to Justice in Both Official Languages, Department of Justice Canada.

The term-analysis documents that pertain to the law of contracts were produced by the Centre de traduction et de terminologie juridiques de Moncton (CTTJ) and those pertaining to the law of torts were produced by the Centre for Legal Translation and Documentation of Ottawa (CTDJ) and the Standardization Directorate of the Translation Bureau of Canada (TSD-TB). A few term-analysis documents which, in the beginning, were produced separately by the CTTJ and the CTDJ were eventually consolidated given that the English terms refer to both contract law and tort law. These term-analysis documents are classified as UNIF (for the French word « unifiés »).

This project led to the publication, in 2009, of the Law of Security Glossary (Common Law), published as Terminology Bulletin 269 (English-French) and Bulletin de terminologie 271 (français-anglais), by the Terminology Standardization Directorate of the Translation Bureau of Canada in collaboration with Promoting Access to Justice in Both Official Languages, Department of Justice Canada.

The term-analysis documents from the “100” series were produced by the Translation Bureau of Canada (BT), those from the “200” series by the Centre for Legal Translation and Documentation (CTDJ) of Ottawa and those from the “300” series by the Centre de traduction et de terminologie juridiques de Moncton (CTTJ).

The term-analysis documents from the “100” series were produced by the Translation Bureau of Canada (BT), those from the “200” series by the Centre for Legal Translation and Documentation (CTDJ) of Ottawa and those from the “300” series by the Centre de traduction et de terminologie juridiques de Moncton (CTTJ).

This project led to the publication of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Glossary (common law) published as Terminology Bulletin 296 (English-French) and Bulletin de terminologie 296 (français-anglais), by the Translation Bureau of Canada.

This projet led to the publication of the Domestic Violence Glossary (common law) by the Translation Bureau of Canada.

The term-analysis documents from the “100” series were produced by the Translation Bureau of Canada (BT), those from the “200” series by the Centre for Legal Translation and Documentation (CTDJ) of Ottawa and those from the “300” series by the Centre de traduction et de terminologie juridiques de Moncton (CTTJ).

During the fiscal year beginning in 2023, the Standardization Committee is focusing on standardizing the legal terminology pertaining to Indigenous Peoples.

During the standardization process, consultations are planned with a User Committee in order to help confirm that the French equivalents recommended by the Standardization Committee for the English terms that were subject to review are valid.

The role of the User Committee is to provide comments regarding the French equivalents recommended by the Standardization Committee. For example, if a member of the User Committee does not agree with the choice of a French equivalent, they may express their reservations and explain why such an equivalent is problematic. These comments contribute to the advancement of the work of the Standardization Committee by encouraging its members to think things through in greater depth.
